MISSIONS AND OUTREACH
The Parish Missions
Committee
The Missions Committee is specifically charged with the task of seeking means by which St. Paul's can fulfill its mission of serving others, thereby enabling us to "proclaim the Gospel by word and deed" outside our immediate membership. The Parish Missions Committee coordinates our mission outreach. We're deeply involved with organizations like OPEN-M (Opportunity Parish Ecumenical Neighborhood Ministry), LOVE-INC (Local Christians Organized to Volunteer Energies in the Name of Christ), and others. We support four local food pantries with our "brown bag Sunday" food collections.

2007 Mission
Committee Summary
The St. Paul’s Mission Committee is charged to “Proclaim the
Gospel by Word and Deed.” We
show God’s love through our service
to others in
Akron,
in the United States, and
internationally.
Thank you to the dedicated members
of the 2007 Mission Committee for
serving the congregation and the
community, and for providing
opportunities for members of the
congregation to become part of
mission work: Elizabeth Armstrong,
Bill Baird, Nan Bartlett, Rob
Cockfield, Lisa Consilio, Deidre
Bullock, Sarah Craven, Paul Frank,
Bruce Freeman, Co-chair, Dr. Jeannie
Kienzle, Shannon Kotradi, Dave &
Cindy McBee, Maura O’Shea, Co-Chair,
Karen Oyler, Jan Rice, Jane Scott,
Chuck and Bonnie Severt, Mary
Shepherd, Liz Winson, the Rev. Polly
Glanville, Deacon and the Reverend
Mark Pruitt, Rector.
St. Paul’s
has served the community in the
following ways this year:
-
St. Paul’s continues to be a
support congregation for
Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN)
through volunteering for 5
designated weeks throughout the
year. The work includes
coordinating food, providing
fellowship to the homeless
families, and staying overnight at
the host church (Fairlawn West
United Church of Christ) for three
evenings during the week. Several
fundraising projects raised nearly
$1,000 for IHN this year.
-
As a covenant church with OPEN-M,
St. Paul’s participates in many
volunteer activities. This fall,
over 200 bags of sugar were
collected for Christmas baskets,
and we still continue to collect
jars of peanut butter.
-
The Mission Committee supported an
emergency request from Good
Neighbors for their Inner City
Grocery Store by providing them
with $9,660 from John S. Knight
Mission Funds and the St. Paul’s
Christmas Fund, with consent of
the Vestry.
-
St. Paul’s Youth Group raised and
collected $3800 to furnish two
classrooms in El Salvador. Food
collections and funds collected
from the "Souper" Bowl in January
went to the Akron Canton Food Bank
and to Interfaith Housing Network.
-
St. Paul’s Youth Group was
nominated for the Haven of Rest
Volunteer of the Year award for
their monthly volunteer work of
feeding the homeless.
-
The Mission Committee participated
in St. Paul's Lay Ministry Fair to
inform parishioners of mission
work and to recruit volunteers.
-
Brown Bag Sundays resulted in
donations to Good Samaritan Hunger
Center. The congregation donated
toiletry items for Legacy III.
-
In April, six adults and six youth
went to New Orleans to help with
distribution of goods and the
house-gutting program. In July,
five youth and two adults spent a
week in Monessen, PA, working with
youth throughout the country in
forming positive relationships
throughout and Monessen community
as well as improving the lives of
Monessen residents.
-
Work has begun on a church and
school in Liberia through the
Frank World Mission Fund.
Groundbreaking was January 5,
2007!
-
The Mission Committee worked with
the Senior Warden in organizing
the Bishop’s Annual Appeal at St.
Paul’s.
-
The Mission Committee conducted
UTO (United Thank Offering) and
Pink Envelope collections, which
are distributed nationally and to
local agencies.
-
Maura O’Shea and Sarah Cravens,
members of the Mission Committee,
attended the first Diocesan
Mission Summit in September in
Sandusky, Ohio.
-
The Angel Tree project provided
Broken Chains Ministry with 130
gifts to be distributed to 100
children during the Christmas
holidays.
· The
Mission Committee managed the
Christmas Emergency Fund ($21,380.03
collected in the Christmas season of
2006), which was distributed to
needy individuals primarily through
LOVE, Inc., Akron/Summit Community
Action, Inc. and OPEN-M. Funds from
the Easter Fund went to support the
Youth Group domestic trips and
mission outreach projects such as
building a Habitat home in 2008 and
our mission work in Haiti.
