Habitat for Humanity of Summit County (“Habitat”) is a non-profit faith-based organization that has been building homes in our area since 1987. Habitat works to develop communities with God’s people in need by building, so that there are decent houses in decent communities in which God’s people can live and grow into all that he intends. Habitat homes are sold to qualified partner families on a 20-year no-interest mortgage. Each partner family must invest 250 “sweat equity” hours into their own home, other homes, and educational sessions. Habitat intends that each family should be given the proper educational tools to maintain their home both physically and financially for years to come.

St. Paul’s, in cooperation with the “Common Mission Coalition” (a group of churches in the Akron area brought together by members of the St. Paul’s Missions Committee), built its most recent house on Thorpe Street in Akron in the summer of 2008. Another home build is anticipated for the summer of 2010.

It is important to the Missions Committee at St. Paul’s that our hands follow our financial support for these projects, and our work with Habitat exemplifies that joining together of our money and our hands-on labor. For further information about upcoming Habitat projects, contact Mary Shepherd.

This summer, St. Paul's will build its fifth Habitat house in 2000.  As a member of the Common Mission Coalition, St. Paul's and five other local congregations will build a two-storey home in Akron, to be completed by November 2010.  It's not too soon to volunteer to help.  We are looking for carpenters, food preparers, landscapers, schedulers, and safety coordinators.  All construction volunteers must be 18 or older.
