Proclamation has been part of the Christian faith since its beginning and part of the biblical tradition that predated Jesus. Preaching can teach, encourage, comfort, disturb, confront, explain, challenge, admonish, ennoble, energize, or do all of these things at once. The clergy at St. Paul’s take sermon preparation seriously, devoting time and prayer to it, listening to the voice of God in Scripture and thinking through the issues and complexities of our lives, all for the greater good of God’s church. ‘We do not preach ourselves,’ following the model of Paul, but like him, strive to be Christ-centered. We may be living in an age of “diminished Christianity” as one scholar contends. Whether this is true or not, our conviction is that preaching deserves our best efforts, and that faithful preaching is essential to living out the Christian faith in its joy-filled fullness.
